Our Favorite Travel Art Sketchbooks

I often am asked what journal I prefer when I travel. I have collected many over the years but have narrowed down the list to my top favorites and why! Many of our classes are travel related so having tools that are easy to take on the go is key for my art practice. With our newest class, Oaxaca Urban Sketching launching soon we wanted to give you a list of our favorites in case you want a new sketchbook for class or for your upcoming summer travels!

Shop Ranger Dylusions Creative Journal

WHY I LOVE THEM - These journals come in a variety of sizes, have thick paper that is ideal for mixed media, the paper is a soft warm white color that makes the page not feel so stark, and they even come with a little envelope to put collected items in. I like the simple Kraft cover since it is durable and can also be easily decorated with handmade papers collected from your travels.

Rustico Pablo Leather Journal

WHY I LOVE THEM - If your looking for that handmade feel journal, this is the one! With cold pressed watercolor paper with frayed edges, hand sewn into a steardy and beautiful leather cover this journal really feels special. The leather comes in a variety of colors and can easily slide into a purse or backpack. I also love their travel journal set which includes the journal, small leather pouch for your drawing materials or paintbrushes, and a travel water color set with travel brushes.

Moleskine Journal with Rustico Notebook Cover

WHY I LOVE THEM - Moleskin is a classic journal and can be found in most hobby or art stores. The pages aren’t as thick as the Ranger or Rustico journals but are solid enough that you can add some layering. I like this journal paired with the Rustico notebook cover as you can slide in a few collage materials and pens to carry on the go. The notebook cover can be sold with or without the Moleskine journal. When looking for notebook portfolios or covers, I would opt for one that fits a standard size journal if you want to swap this out, and that can easily fit in a purse. This cover is ideal because it is compatible size wise with many journals!

Peg & Awl Landscape Orra Sketchbook

WHY I LOVE THEM - The quality of Peg & Awl’s products are wonderful. I have a variety of items from them for my travels and studio and love them all! This journal is no fuss, slim and can fit even in a large wallet which makes it extremely versatile. I love the long landscape version because you can work in different perspectives.

Hand Book Paper Co. Travelogue Journal

WHY I LOVE THEM - Do you prefer linen to leather? If so, this is a great choice! Thinner paper sheets make it great for sketching and watercolors and an envelope in the back is great for storing travel ephemera.

Journal + Sketchbooks from your Travels

And last but not least on the list, I love to collect journals when I am traveling. You can find some amazing handmade journals from artisans. I have collected some with a variety of covers including fabric, handmade papers, wood and more. This is a wonderful way to bring your travels home with you and support local artists.
