October - A Collection of Curiosities

As the season transitions, it's easy to draw parallels to the changes we need to embrace in our lives and artistic practices. I cherish the opportunity to dedicate time each month to explore my curiosities, assess my priorities both in and out of the studio, and make necessary adjustments. I like to kick off each monthly session by creating a yummy vision board filled with ideas. Following that, I compile a concise list of goals or priorities for myself, our family, and my art practice. The aim is to keep this list short and focused.

Next, I develop action items to help me reach those goals, which for me is a deeply creative process. The visual representation of the board allows me to channel my focus. My curiosities guide me along the path of inspiration.

This month's vision board captures a moody vibe! I find myself captivated by moody scenes, rich jewel toned palettes, textured and layered interiors, ethereal skies, spontaneous abstracts, moments of slow living, contrasts in nature, seasonal recipes, and minimalist homekeeping concepts. We’re only a couple of weeks into October, and I’m eager to see how these elements influence my art this season.

In other musings, I have begun reading the books Letters to a Starseed by Rebecca Campbell and The Second Mountain by David Brooks. I have drawn inspiration from seasonal recipes in the cookbooks The Ranch Table by Elizabeth Poett and Half Baked Harvest Every Day. I can’t stop admiring interior design from various Instagram accounts such as @manwithahammer, @leannefordinteriors, and @alchemy_collective_ . Each week, I have been collecting moody stem flowers from Trader Joe’s to craft my own bouquets. My closet has been minimal and simple but filled with cozy layers. And lately, daily walks have been a must and I seize every opportunity to capture the autumn sky on camera.

In studio, landscapes and abstracts dominate my work. The landscapes are steeped in a moody palette, favoring muted autumn tones over bright colors, complemented by those ethereal cloudy skies. In contrast, my abstracts are characterized by pure spontaneity — no direction or planned out compositions, just pure experimentation. It’s fascinating how we sometimes require this dichotomy in our artistic practices.

If you missed it, I shared some art prompts for the autumn seasonalong with a mood board to inspire your creativity. What curiosities are emerging in your collection this month? I would love to connect and hear from you!

With love,

Kristy
